Jen is acting Chair of Fittings Multimedia Arts which is a disability led Theatre Company with offices in Liverpool and Scotland


As an artistic director Jen has worked regionally, nationally (touring and individual works) and internationally (New York, Berlin, Porto, Lisbon, Luxembourg, Serbia & Hong Kong) working on small, medium and large scale productions. Although perfectly at home in dedicated theatre spaces Jen specialises in multimedia and site specific theatre and always strives to use live music within her work. She is executive director and co-founder of Bill Elms & Jen Heyes Productions Ltd and founder and artistic director of Cut to the Chase Productions.
In the 2000 Liverpool Echo Arts and Entertainment awards her production of THERESE RAQUIN won the Best Liverpool Production award and she was a finalist in the Best New Talent category as a director. She was the director in residence at the Unity Theatre in 2002. As a finalist in the 2006 Merseyside Women of the Year Awards she was highly commended for her work as a director. In 2007 she was commissioned by The Liverpool Culture Company to create, produce and direct WALL TALKS, a large site specific multi media work to mark the city’s 800th birthday and the abolition of the slave trade. Her production of BLOOD WEDDING in 2008 at The Liverpool Playhouse, she commissioned world class Flamenco guitarist Juan Martin to write the music and play live in the production. From February to July 2010 she was the artistic director/ creative producer for the Four Corners of the City Exhibition at The Bluecoat Arts Centre – Four Corners is Culture Liverpool’s city wide major participatory arts project.
Also in 2010 she worked closely with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in re- working their Spirit of Christmas Concerts with soprano/presenter Lesley Garrett, Dr Ian Tracey conducting, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The RLPO choir and the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir as well as a company of actors. In May 2011 her film THESE STREETS won Best Overall Film Award in The Clapperboard Awards @ The Lowry, Salford Quays. 2011 Curiouser & Curiouser @ Tate Liverpool with creative input from Punch Drunk Enrichment in collaboration for their forthcoming Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass exhibition. As the founder and artistic director of Cut to the Chase Productions she regularly commissions other artists to create new work for the company as well as bringing together production teams to work on theatre and film projects. Her latest Cut to the Chase work was Tony Teardrop by multi award winning Esther Wilson, designed by Myriddin Wannell (NTW The Passion, Kneehigh and Wildworks) images by the celebrated Lee Jeffries following this she was the artistic director of Opera North’s Switch ON innovative arts project in collaboration with St Georges Crypt. Over a period of 18 months she created, produced and directed 3 high profile productions including Epstein – The Man Who Made The Beatles which transferred to London’s West End in July 2014. In 2016 she was artistic director of the European City of Sport 2016 Opening Ceremony @Northwood Stadium, Stoke On Trent produced Science in the Stadium in partnership with Everton FC and The Open University and worked for London Artists Projects on their major new production entitled Mick’s Friend. Jen is also co creator/director of Through the Wilderness a new choral theatre work created with Irish composer John Browne (The Suppliant Women, The Events, ENO, Royal Opera House and South Bank Centre) staged at Liverpool Cathedral in 2017. As associate director of London Artists Projects, Jen is directing the rehearsal and reading of Spider Love a new play plus an ‘in conversation’ with National Theatre actor Henry Woolf @ The British Library in October 2017 hosted by theatre critic Michael Billington

Theatre Practitioner & Educator

As a practitioner Jen has worked, by invitation, at the Esmae Academy of Performing Arts in Porto-Portugal, Munsbach International Summer School – Luxembourg. She has worked on numerous community projects in the North West of England working with young people and vulnerable adults, including Young Carers for The Tim Parry Jonathan Ball Trust and most recently with vulnerable adults from SPIDER Project, Genie in the Gutter and The Basement.
She has worked as teacher and director in education at numerous primary and secondary schools locally and as a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University for 7 years as well as doing guest lectures and workshops at Hope Street Actors Centre, Liverpool
Hope University, LIPA and the University of Wolverhampton. Her areas of expertise being:
Directing, Site Specific Production, Multi Media Performance, The text from page to stage, page to screen, Voice and Text, Physical Theatre, Adaptation, Movement Mask and The Actor, Devising, Voice and Song, Community Theatre, Improvisation, Experimental Theatre.
